Personal Trainer Exeter Asks How Does Analysing Your Environment Make You Free, Happy, Confident, Sexy And Free From Pain?
Today is a coaching exercise I am using in my on-line group
The activity is called "Environment analysis"
Whenever the brain goes into stress out mode whenever things aren't going to plan and you end up feeling C.R.A.P (Completely Rubbish And Pointless) about yourself there is always a "thing" that happens or it may be a series of "things".
When this occurs you activate an adrenal response within your head that has 5 responses Fight (get angry), Flight (run away), Freeze (procrastinate, denial, etc), Fornicate (you all have children so you know this) and Food.
The last one being the easiest response to use for obvious reasons (albeit it does usually do one of the others first and then goes to food to replace the energy it is using).
So if you are still reacting and reaching for the food the answer is simple, something is keeping you stressed out!!
I know obvious and you want to be like really Dave???
Hear me out.
The real issue is not the thing or series of things, it is how you feel and your perception of the things that has triggered the emotional response and may now be continually triggering (patterns and habits).
Now if that is the case, you can't always control the stuff (welcome to life), you can always control you, especially your mind, it just takes some observation and repetition.
So my coaching drill is simply this, observe (without judgement) for the thing or series of things that trigger you to get stressed out, crappy, annoyed, make you procrastinate).
Watch for a change in mood first.
Once you feel it coming on then ask what was I doing to trigger this?
What was it within my environment that caused me to feel this way?
Once you have the thing(s), then you can do 1 of 3 things:
Remove it (not always possible if it's a person, still do it if you can).
Reduce it (place it some where different, find a way to reduce contact time, again practicality).
Re-frame it ( quite simply think differently about it, not the easiest, but practically the best option long term).
Simply ask is this story really true?
Where does this story about (things) come from?
How does this story serve me and who I really am?
What would be a better reflection of who i really am?
How would i like to feel instead?
When I feel this way what action would I take around these (things) instead?
Now spend a few mins breathing deeply, trying to call up these new feelings within you once you have them (say joy is your new one) then go and start to do one of the new actions while feeling joyful.
Simply repeat this action or another off the list above everything you see the same thing(s).
I know this sounds too simple, please don't underestimate it's power. I used to be a right negative bar steward that berated himself, I litrerally used my diabetes wrist abnd as a pattern interupt to ping myself everytime I was negging out!! Took a while but no more negging out!!
Simple but effective!!
